Overview


The Product Manager, Desktop and Server Management will manage existing [Company] systems management offerings such as asset management, license management, and software distribution and drive the [Company] systems management roadmap to bring new products to market. The PM will be responsible for the product through the entire life-cycle, driving requirements for targeted, high quality products that provide unique value to our customers. To achieve this, the PM must be both a contributor and a very strong team player. The PM will be responsible for leading the product team from initial ideas to releasing the product, assisting with implementation and go-to-market, and managing the product’s evolution post-introduction.

 

The PM must possess a blend of business and technical savvy; a big-picture vision, attention to detail and the energy to make vision a reality. A diverse skill-set is required, including both a technical understanding of current systems management technologies such as software distribution, OS provisioning, and configuration management, as well as knowledge of emerging technologies such as virtualization and AMT. The PM must enjoy spending time with customers to understand their problems, and find innovative solutions for the broader market. An ability to learn and adapt quickly is a must.

 

The PM will be responsible for documenting market and product requirements including competitive analysis / positioning and researching, validating, and prioritizing product features. The PM is expected to effectively serve as both a product line manager and a technical program implementation lead. The PM must be able to communicate with all areas of the company. The PM will work intimately with the development organization define product release requirements. The PM will work with marketing to define the go-to-market strategy, helping them to understand the product positioning, key benefits, and target customers. The PM will work with the field sales team to develop charter customers and product references, and help educate the technical field organization on new products.

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage the entire product line life cycle from strategic planning to tactical activities.
  • Evangelize desktop and server management solutions and provide product and technical vision and leadership internally, and to customers, and prospects.
  • Specify market requirements for current and future products by conducting market research supported by on-going visits to customers, prospects, and competitive insight.
  • Translate market requirements into prioritized product functionality requirements and specifications. Work closely with the development organization to specify functional enhancements to product and [Company] Enterprise Suite platform, release planning and schedules. Manage progress and coordinate development of product enhancements.
  • Develop product positioning, competitive analysis, sales enablement, and other product and product marketing material in conjunction with Product Marketing.
  • Work closely with marketing to help develop and implement go-to-market plans, press and analyst activities, and other related activities.
  • Analyze and maintain financial performance and market information for products.
  • Hands-on technical knowledge and customer-related experience with a variety of enterprise systems management products.
  • Establish market research and analysis plans, monitor development of future products. Where appropriate, assures appropriate support for field sales.
  • Promote and market products through effective communication of technical and non-technical product features to meet varying business needs.

Qualifications

  • At least 5 yrs of experience in product management, product marketing, or sales engineering with at least 3 years experience with systems management including OS provisioning, software deployment, and configuration management. Windows experience is required, and Unix / Linux experience is a strong plus.
  • Very strong technical background, with a Computer Science or technical degree preferred. An MBA is a plus.
  • Outstanding creative thinking and out-of-the-box abilities.
  • Strong leadership, presentation and technical writing skills are required.
  • This position requires travel (20%), to customers, prospects, and partners primarily in North America, but also worldwide.
